The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a Bill to eliminate HND/BSC dichotomy in the country.
The Bill, which was titled “Bill for an Act to eliminate and prohibit dichotomy and discrimination between First degrees and HND in the same profession” was co-sponsored by Honorable Ali Isa from Gombe state and Edward Pwajok from Plateau state.
The Bill which was passed at plenary yesterday had since been passed for second reading in April 2017.
The Bill seeks to end perceived discrimination against graduates of polytechnic and remove the challenges faced by HND holders in the public service.
Speaking on the Bill, Pwajok said, the “discrimination against graduates of Polytechnic had no moral justification and it could make the international community look down on the status of educational institutions in the country”.
The lawmaker also said the segregation reflect in their grade level placement as “those with B.Sc are placed on level 8, while those with HND are placed on level 7” and in effect, the disparity also reflects in their salaries as some organizations pay Degree Holders N100,000 at entry point, while their counterpart with HND are paid N70,000.
Only recently, the federal government abolished the dichotomy between the two class of degree holders in the services under the ministry of interior.
